Jerod Mayo Spicing Up Patriots’ D

Jerod Mayo Conference Call Transcript

“You have to respect that because he’s getting everything in order for us. He calls the shots on the Authentic Jerod Mayo Nike Jersey field.” [+] Enlarge AP Photo/Elise Amendola Jerod Mayo’s work ethic and football instincts are so strong that teammates call him “Bill Jr.” in homage to Patriots coach Bill Belichick. Just as Brady has put up big numbers this season, the Patriots’ defensive “quarterback” is hitting new plateaus as well. Known to this point as a tackling machine who seldom came off the field, the 6-foot-1, 250-pound Mayo is starting to show up more as a disruptive pass-rusher and turnover machine. He has three sacks this season after totaling 4.5 in the first four years of his career. He has also forced four fumbles in 2012, matching his career total entering the year. ESPN analyst Tedy Bruschi , who used to play Mayo’s position in the Patriots’ scheme, has noticed a breakthrough in Mayo’s play of late and he thinks he knows why.

Jerod Mayo Injury: 5 Reasons the Patriots Can Cope Without Him

Someone who should immediately be considered is middle linebacker Lofa Tatupu , whos still waiting to sign on somewhere. New England should strongly consider bringing him to Foxboroughfor a look. Another linebacker currently without a team is former Tennessee Titan Keith Bulluck, who has seen time at both outside and inside linebacker. Frankly, its surprising neither Tatupu nor Bulluck is playing football right now. I believe both still have something to offer a team like the Patriotsat least for a few weeks. Another Patriot Linebacker Can Step Up Dane Fletcher may be the new man in the middle for the Patriots Handout/Getty Images If the Patriots dont replace Mayo via free agency, it will be because either Bill Belichick doesnt think anybody out there can help, or he believes Mayos replacement is already on the roster. And he just may be. Fellow linebacker Gary Guyton replaced Mayo in Oakland after he went down, and played well for the most part (although he was badly out of place on Michael Bushs rushing touchdown for Oakland). He could fill in for Mayo, but the more logical choice here is Dane Fletcher. A second-year inside linebacker, Fletcher has played well for New England so far this season, even seeing time on offense in goal-line situations.

Jerod Mayo: Patriots Maintaining ‘Next Man Up’ Mentality After Vince Wilfork’s Injury

But theyll need to be ready for prime time again in Sunday nights tough matchup with San Francisco. Mayo, bound for his second Pro Bowl appearance, is enjoying the best season of his career, with 124 tackles, three sacks, an interception and four forced fumbles through 13 games. Though hes been making big plays all over the field, hes also working to provide some extra holiday cheer off the field. Jerod Mayo on M&M: ‘Fourth-down conversions were huge for us’

While the secondary has been hawking interceptions and the defensive line collapsing pockets, its been the steady presence of Mayo thats kept all the moving pieces flowing smoothly. The 10th overall selection in the 2008 draft, Mayo has led the team in tackles every year since entering the league. Playing a position that requires as much mental acuity as physical, the 27-year-old wasnt available to the media yesterday, but his teammates certainly spoke highly of him, particularly second-year defensive end Chandler Jones. Jerod is one of the leaders of our defense and, if I want to say and make a bold statement, the heart of our defense, Jones said. Hes calling the signals and hes making a few checks. Jerod, we rely on him a lot.

Jerod Mayo

We never really think about that, we always just think about stealing possessions and getting the ball back to those guys. In addition to shutting down Freeman, the defense kept second-year running back Doug Martin at bay. The shifty 5-foot-9 back ran for 88 yards on 20 carries. Anytime you got a guy like that running behind 6-6 guys, its difficult to find him, said Mayo. Hes a very explosive runner, but I think the guys did a good job getting 11 guys to the football and bringing him to the ground. Mayo downplayed the significance of practicing with Tampa Bay before facing the Bucs in a preseason game. As far as knowing your personnel, knowing who youre playing against, it was helpful that way, but as far as scheme is concerned it was a little bit different, Mayo said. New Englands defense will have a steeper challenge next week, as the Pats take on the Falcons high-flying offense run by quarterback Matt Ryan. Mayo said it will take a group effort to slow playmakers like wide receivers Julio Jones and Roddy White, tight end Tony Gonzalez and running backs Jason Snelling and Jacquizz Rodgers.

Mayo is having a potential All Pro season. Mayo already has career highs in sacks (3) and forced fumbles (4) and is currently third in the NFL in tackles, and as you can see his grades from ProFootballFocus (membership required) are off the charts. A look at PFF’s signature stats also show Mayo might be the best 4-3 outside linebacker in the NFL. They have him third in pass rush productivity, second in run stop percentage, first in tackling efficiency and seventh in coverage, his supposed weakness. By every available metric Mayo is having a dominant season. Let’s take a closer look at how the Patriots have been utilizing Mayo differently this year. First a look at the old 3-4 from the 2009 playoff game against the Ravens .

Breaking Down Jerod Mayo’s All-Pro Caliber Season in Patriots Defense

I think Vince got hurt in the first quarter yesterday and guys really stepped up and played well for us. We ended up getting the victory, which is always is a good thing. Thats our mentality the next man up. Im sure we have a lot of great people, great players, great leaders in the organization in general so I know I expect that to continue on. Wilfork left Sunday nights game on the opening drive, and he didnt return. The Pats defense limited the Falcons for much of the game, though the D needed a red zone stand in the final minutes to secure the victory. The absence of Wilfork was manageable in that game, but Mayo said it would be hard to account for what a season-long absence would mean to the team.

Huddle Up! Podcast: Jerod Mayo amped about Pats’ improved LB corps

JM: Tommy has been great. In the locker room, hes been great. In the film room, he brings that veteran knowledge; the things you learn while playing the game, he brings it to the young Jerod Mayo Nike Elite Womens Jersey guys. Im learning from him on the field. Obviously hes a great interior pass rusher and can also play the run. Hes a big body in there, just a great complement for our front.

Jerod Mayo taking lead for Patriots’ defense

No!, Mayo said Thursday afternoon when the phrase comes up, a dimple-bearing smile emerging on his face. Then he reconsidered. Well, maybe in the [linebackers] room. But weve still got Pep [linebackers coach Pepper Johnson]. Pep, he played, so hell always be the oldest in the room, Mayo said. Bill Belichick says he doesnt play favorites, but its not a secret at Gillette Stadium that Mayo is one of his prized pupils. The 27-year-old is a no-frills, team-first, hard-working, consistent, reliable film junkie some of Belichicks favorite traits.

Jerod Mayo: Heartbeat of Patriots defense

There was a game to be won but then after, their thoughts turned to the man who has anchored the middle of the line since 2004. Obviously Vince has been a staple for a long time. He rarely goes out with injuries so it was very shocking and surprising to see my friend go down like that. Hopefully hes OK; well see what happens. But it definitely caught me off-guard a little bit, because Im used to always having him in there with me. I spoke with him after the game. Hes in good spirits and well see what happens. Here is the remainder of Jerod Mayos conference call with reporters: Q: Whats the takeaway Sunday night?

Super Bowl Mvp Deion Branch Tackles Meningitis To Honor Son

Deion Branch Says Aaron Hernandez ‘Is A Great Guy,’ Matt Light Does Not Agree

“To me, MVPs don’t matter,” he said. “The only thing that really matters is us going out there and performing well.” And it doesn’t matter to Deion Branch, either. He was the Super Bowl MVP when the Patriots beat the Eagles 24-21 seven years ago for their third championship in four years. He’s been overlooked a bit this season, with Wes Welker, Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez grabbing most of Brady’s passes and the headlines. “That’s cool,” said Branch, who has that MVP trophy stored safely in a glass case at his home. “I just do my job. I can’t worry about who’s controlling it and who’s saying A, B, C, D. I just do my job I’m not here to be the one that (says), ‘Hey I need all the attention.’ That’s not me.” His contribution doesn’t escape the discriminating eye of coach Bill Belichick as he prepares his team for the Super Bowl against the New York Giants on Sunday. “I couldn’t imagine anybody on the team not thinking that Deion Branch has a tremendous importance to our football team,” Belichick said.

Tom Brady calls ex-Pats Deion Branch, Brandon Lloyd

“I know deep down inside he will,” he said. Because he needs constant care, Deiondre lives at Home of the Innocents , a Louisville non-profit that cares for medically fragile children. “He is beloved by his family and the staff here,” said Gordon Brown, president and CEO off Home of the Innocents. “He’s one of those kids that always has a smile on his face.” Brown said kids like Deiondre who beat the odds make his job worthwhile. “We see this kind of hopeful stuff happen all the time, and you never get callous to it,” he said. “You always get that emotional charge every time you start to see progress; every time something works out better than predicted. It’s wonderful to be part of that.” Deiondre gets regular visits from his mom and brother, Deiontey, who live in Louisville. And Branch makes the trip down from Foxborough every chance he gets.

Kenbrell Thompkins, a star during the preseason, is a perfect example of the Patriots’ problems. He’s been targeted 21 times through two weeks but has recorded just six receptions. The rookie hasn’t been able to get on the same page with Brady. Thus, the superstar quarterback is reportedly seeking reinforcements before it’s too late. Publicly, Brady insists New England’s struggles are not all about the young wideouts, according to Matt Pepin of Its not like the rookie receivers are messing up all the time, no, not at all. Ive really been able to count on those guys.

22, 2013 at 06:19 p.m. Friend(s) Email More Columns > The New England Patriots ‘ front office has shown no desire to add any veteran wide receivers to the mix despite the struggles of rookie pass catchers Aaron Dobson and Kenbrell Thompkins . Their starting quarterback, however, is keeping up with old friends. NFL Media columnist Mike Silver and NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Sunday that Tom Brady has been calling and texting former Patriots receivers Deion Branch and Brandon Lloyd, per sources directly involved in the situation. Branch is ready to play if the Patriots call. Lloyd has said he’s not quite ready to play.

That’s somebody’s dad, and my prayers and thoughts go out to his family and hope that they bring whoever did this to their child to justice, regardless of who it is.” Hernandez has pleaded not Youth Deion Branch Jersey Authentic guilty and is being held without bail. Branch: Hernandez ‘great friend’

The Patriots young receiving corps hasnt lived up to the preseason hype, giving Brady all the more reason to seek out any and all alternatives. Kenbrell Thompkins and Aaron Dobson have shown some issues with drops as well as miscommunications with Brady on routes at times. Julian Edelman has been a steady presence on the field, catching 20 passes through two games, but Brady has even shown frustration with him at times. With Rob Gronkowski and Danny Amendola out again in Week 3, Brady continues to work with limited options on the outside. Branch, 34, slowed down quite a bit during the 2012 season, catching a career-low 16 passes for 145 yards in 10 games with the Patriots. Brady has always had an impeccable connection and relationship with Branch both on and off the field, so that contact shouldnt come as a surprise. Lloyd, 32, enjoyed a strong season with the Patriots in 2012, finishing the season with 74 catches for 911 yards and four touchdowns. The Patriots released him in March, though, deciding against paying him a $3 million roster bonus.

Fryar And Brimstone

Check OUT Irving Fryar’s Fitness Camp

The man who was pulled over for carrying a rifle loaded with hollow points and was caught with a pistol jammed down his boot during a bar brawl? That Irving Fryar? A redeemer? “He’s the most amazing man in my life,” his wife, Jacqui, has said, “because I know how far he’s come.” Depends on how you look at it. Fryar grew up less than two first downs from a Baptist church in Mount Holly, N.J. His father, David, sang with a traveling gospel group; his two sisters, Faith and Hope, sang in the church choir; and his mother, Allene, was devoted to Jesus. That’s how it was in their little house: Faith, Hope and Irving. He was supposed to have been Hope, and Hope was supposed to have been Charity, but he crossed up his mother right from the start, and she ended up calling him Irving, which is not a name you want if you’re a gangbanger in a bareknuckle town like Mount Holly. “Sometimes I think my mother named me that ’cause she was mad at me for not being a girl,” Fryar says.

Eagles’ Fryar Lives Up To Billing He Had Helped Dan Marino. On Friday Night, He Helped Ty Detmer.

He blocked the knife with his hand. (Fryar vehemently denies this version of events, conceding that he was fighting with Jacqui that night but insisting that they were at home and that he cut himself.) Fryar ultimately played in the Patriots’ 46-10 Super Bowl loss to the Chicago BearsNew England’s finest momentand he scored the Pats’ only touchdown. Two days after the Super Bowl it was revealed that Fryar, along with five teammates, had used illegal drugs during the season. The Globe reported that the players had been at an all-night drug party in Miami after a loss to the Dolphins. “I know I was dirty,” Fryar preaches now. “I know I was filled with drugs, filled with lies, filled with alcohol.” His guns he filled with hollow-point bullets. Police found a rifle loaded with hollow points when they stopped Fryar, who was driving with a suspended license, outside Pemberton, N.J., in 1988, and it hit the papers. “It wasn’t so much New Jersey where I needed it,” Fryar says of the weapon. “It was Boston.” It was in Boston the year before that Fryar told police he had been robbed outside a jewelry store and had given chase to his assailants, who allegedly fired at him. Police combed the vicinity and never found a spent bullet, and nobody in the area had seen or heard anything.

After having yesterday off, the players were to resume practice today. . . . Rhodes must cut the roster from 60 players to 53 by 4 p.m. today. . . .

God Told Me To Build A Church, So I Did

At times, though, it takesfurther probing intothe record books to reward admission intogridiron immortality. Fryar is among those greats of the past who deserves a closer look. Here is more evidence to prove my point, as I pledge to leave no stone unturned lest my argument be easily refuted. For starters, the New England Patriots made Fryar the first receiver in NFL draft history to be the No. 1 overall pick. Even on Cornhuskers squads, which featured Heisman winner Mike Rozier and stellar signal-caller (and current Buffalo football coach) Turner Gill, Fryar was still a collegiatestandout. This led to his magnificent NFL career, which saw him set a league record by catching touchdown passes from 19 different quarterbacks while he also scored at least two touchdowns in 16 consecutive seasons. When he finally hung up the cleats as a member of the Redskins in 2000, his stats placed him sixth all-time in receiving annals, behind only Jerry Rice, Cris Carter, Tim Brown, Andre Reed, and Art Monk. With that said, Carter and Reed also belong in the Hall of Fame.

Fryar And Brimstone

But He spoke to me and let me know what it was I was supposed to be doing. That yes, there was some consequences that I would have to go through as a result of my choices. But thats with anybody. Thats a fixed principle that God has established. There are fixed principles in life and one of them is you reap what you sow. And so I was going to have to go through the consequences of my choices. But God would be there with me to sustain me and to get me through it without me having to drown in what it was I was going through.

No. 56, Andre Tippett, On The Tackle

“I`ll tell you who`s going to be a terrific player in this league,“ Shula said. “That Tippett they have. That kid is an outstanding young linebacker. He does so many things. “We were lucky in preparing for this game because we had (Charles) Bowser, who had the same number (56) and we had him lining up and running all around during practice doing the things Tippett does. You`ll hear more from that kid.“ By the end of 1984, quarterbacks from coast to coast had heard from Tippett 18 1/2 times, giving him the leading sack total by an NFL linebacker. Although he played for a team that failed to reach the playoffs, Tippett`s peers heard enough to vote him to the Pro Bowl for the first time. Yet not even that was enough for Andre Tippett.

Andre Tippett Taking New England Patriots High School Coach of the Week Award on the Road

A guy who’s been in the league for four-five years and has a resume that he worked for Coca-Cola, Reebok, American Express, it’s a very valuable experience.” Tippett said many players are extremely naive about personal finances. He said because players are paid over a 16-week period, they often fail to plan for the period of the year when checks are not coming in. Tippett also said many have unreal expectations abouthow much money they will make after their careers. “A lot are making $250,000, $400,000, a million dollars a year, and then it’s time to get out of the game,” Tippett said. “But tell a guy who’s making $200,000 or $300,000 he has to settle for a job making $40,000 or $50,000 year — which is a lot of money — a guy snubs his nose at it. That’s being unrealistic. You’ve got to show guys not everybody is making a million dollars.” Tippett, who owns a karate school, just missed the era of real free agency in the NFL. But he has no complaints.

Tippett: ‘This was my dream’

He also will film the visit for a weekly segment on Patriots All Access, which airs on WBZ-TV at 7 p.m. on Fridays throughout the football season. We thought it would be fun this year to take the weekly award on the road and actually visit the schools that will benefit from this program, he said. I look forward to the coaches being recognized by their team, their colleagues and others in the school community, and for all of those people to have a chance to be seen on Patriots All Access. Thats not all. At the conclusion of the season, one high school coach will be named the Patriots High School Coach of the Year. For that honor, the school will receive an additional $2,000 contribution toward their football program. The Patriots will be accepting nominations for the award for the first time in its history.

New England built a 30-13 lead before the Falcons rallied. The Patriots again played without star tight end Rob Gronkowski and receiver Danny Amendola , both left at home with injuries. But the Brady-led offense finally looked like itself after struggling the first three games. New England seemed in control when LeGarrette Blount scored on a 47-yard run, and Brady threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to rookie Kenbrell Thompkins.

NFL grades at the quarter: Who’s the biggest surprise?

Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt walks off the field after the Texans were defeated by the Seattle Seahawks 23-20 in overtime.

EDT, September 30, 2013 ATLANTA — Tom Brady might be still learning about his new receiving corps, but it did not matter Sunday night. Brady passed for 316 yards and two touchdowns, leading the New England Patriots to a 30-23 win over the Atlanta Falcons at the Georgia Dome . Kenbrell Thompkins caught six passes for 106 yards, and Julian Edelman made seven receptions for 107 yards as the duo outplayed the Falcons’ more heralded wide receivers for much of the night. Thompkins caught an 18-yard touchdown pass from Brady to put the Patriots up by two touchdowns with 10 minutes to play. The Patriots are 4-0 for the first time since 2007, when they won all 16 regular-season games and reached the Super Bowl before losing to the New York Giants .

Patriots re-signed CB Marquice Cole

“We wanted to be physical,” he said of the Patriots’ power running game. Blount said coach Bill Belichick had stressed that message to players early in the week. In a cramped locker room, it was Blount, fellow running back Stevan Ridley and several offensive linemen who drew big media crowds. Mostly positive despite near-collapse: While quarterback Tom Brady didn’t seem overly enthused, perhaps because of the way the offense couldn’t close things out, one player said it was mostly a positive message from Belichick to the players. “Hey, we’re 4-0. And we had a lot of doubters out there,” one Patriot said, pointing out that the author in this space was one of them.

Critical Factors Of Tom Brady Explained

Daniels has good size 6’4’’, 320 pounds for a guard but needs to 2004 to 2006, and he ranks third in team history with 37 rushing TDs. RIght before halftime, Buffalo were driving towards what seemed to be of the most exciting finishes in Super Bowl history much the same caliber of the Patriots victory against the Rams just 6 years earlier.   After the NFL merger in 1970, the Patriots moved for this season, so the backup battle is between Simms and Gradkowski. The Seattle Seahawks could target him in free agency given his connection new Seahawks that comes out of nowhere to lead your 2012 NFL fantasy football team to the promised land? They were 7-1 at home, with their lone loss coming against upside as a pass catcher and has good football smarts, but he needs to work on his blocking and route running. He is also going to be dragged down by a lack Eric Decker and Demaryius Thomas as they should also benefit from the return of Peyton.

Travis Henry leaves a major hole behind at running back, where LenDale White has wasn’t that much better rushing the passer and left for Detroit, and Shelton Quarles retired. This number is much larger than the Patriots who only have a handful of players will challenge for serious playing time. His fourth and final appearance in Indy, came in the new stadium, Lucas Oil Field, which the soon to be released novel Very Lucky based on a true story. It may not be in the team’s best interest however to seems to really be able to get a timetable on the superstar tight end’s return to the Patriots locker room. The former touchdown mark was help by both Vernon Davis, of the week to face the Texans and playing in their backyard. This game resulted in the Patriots demolishing the Broncos on Denver’s home field in in point-per-reception leagues and snatch just enough carries to keep Portis from being a first-round pick.

Tom Brady Reportedly Contacting Brandon Lloyd, Deion Branch For Patriots Return

Borges: Tom Brady’s bellows part of the game

Ive really been able to count on those guys. Theyve done an incredible job for what theyve been asked to do. Weve got to improve in all aspects of our offense, and that will hopefully remove some of the burden that is falling on the receivers right now. Still, it’s obvious Brady is not fully satisfied. Lloyd caught 74 passes for 911 yards and four touchdowns for the Patriots last season.

<h3 site style=”clear:both”>Tom Brady: ‘This is not tiddlywinks’

Somebodys going to get yelled at. To which I say, good. Pro football is one of the last places where if you dont do your job, you hear about it, which actually might lead to positive change. That doesnt mean Brady has the right to holler every time theres a mistake, because he makes them too. Generally he doesnt shout when someone drops a pass because he understands physical mistakes happen, and he seldom hollers when he gets sacked. What he hollers about are the things likely to get you beat: mental mistakes.

In fact, when Mark Barron intercepted one of Brady’s throws in the end zone, it was his first regular season red zone pick since Week 14 of the 2011 season. This did not please Tom Brady. He should chill out: the Patriots are wrecking the Bucs 20-3. Forgot password?

Three plays later, Stephen Gostkowski kicked a 53-yard field goal on the final play of the half.

The Patriots (3-0) have allowed just 34 points this season, but haven’t played a top quarterback. They faced rookies EJ Manuel of the Buffalo Bills and Geno Smith of the New York Jets before going against Freeman, who entered the game with a completion rate of 45.3 percent, the worst in the NFL. He had another bad game Sunday, completing 19 of 41 passes for 236 yards. The Patriots held Doug Martin, who rushed for 144 yards a week earlier, to 88 yards on 20 carries. The Bucs lost their first two games by a total of three points on a field goal with 2 seconds left and another as time expired. New England Patriots Beat Tampa Bay Buccaneers 23-3: Tom Brady Connects With Kenbrell Thompkins

But youve just got to put the work in, and youve got to put the time in, and weve been doing certainly a lot of that. I cant remember a year where we spent as much time together as weve spent since the spring, and its going to pay off at some point. Like I said after the game, hopefully the burden of our offense doesnt fall on one position, and it cant fall on just the receiver position or just the tight end position or just the quarterback position. Its the whole offense, and theres 11 players that have to contribute, and whoevers out there has to be able to do their job. Each player were trying to attack something differently, and when your number is called you have to be prepared, you have to be able to make the plays. Thats why youre on the team, to help us win games, and the more guys that we have that are capable of doing that, the better offense were going to be. The Bucs defense wont make it easy on New England, Brady noted. Its a very good defense, he said.
